SCUN’s Students Have Won Good Results in the 2017 National Undergraduate Mathematics Modeling Competition

Recently, the National University Student Mathematical Modeling Committee published the winners list of the 2017 National Undergraduate Mathematical Modeling Competition. The students of SCUN won the National Second Prize, the First and Second Prizes of Hubei Province, and the Third Prize for 6 items. 

This year, SCUN sent a total of 25 teams formed by 75 students to participate in the competition. The participating team members had clear division of labor and close cooperation, did not withdraw and did not back down, actively thought and dared to explore. All the participating teams successfully completed their research papers. Among them, a team formed by Fu Ke, Fu Weiwei, and Suo Jianping from Mathematics and Statistics Institute played well and placing second nationally. During the competition, Vice-President Du Dongyun, and the relevant principals of Mathematics and Statistics Institute, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Institute, Experimental Teaching and Laboratory Management Center and other units visited the team at the event. The teacher team with high sense of responsibility and rich teaching experience formed by staff of Mathematics and Statistics Institute has laid a solid foundation for achieving the good results. 

In order to organize the preparations better, Mathematics and Statistics Institute always hold a two-week pre-competition training during each summer vacation, and invited the winners of the school-level numerical model competition, excellent mathematical modeling amateurs, and previous team members to share their experiences. This year, the teachers of the mathematical modeling coaching team conducted intensive training for more than 100 students from Mathematics and Statistics Institute, Telecommunications Institute, Economics Institute, Computer Science Institute, and Life Sciences Institute. The training is divided into two phases: In the first phase, the participating team members must complete the basic knowledge, basic skills, and then self-drilling of the excellent competition thesis selected by the coaching staff. The second phase is the centralized training stage. The coaching staff combines the knowledge and application of optimization models, equation models, probabilistic statistical models, and discrete models in detail in conjunction with excellent modeling theories. At the same time, the coaching staff designs novel training topics and improves students' ability of modeling in actual combat. 

According to the description of Competition Organizing Committee, the number of participating teams has been increasing year by year, but the absolute number of awards reduced which means the gold content of the awards has continuously increased.
