Professor Cheng Fenggui Rated as a Charity Model of the“10th China Charity Award”

On the afternoon of September 13, the “10th China Charity Award” Commendation Ceremony was held at the Great Hall of the People to commend the enterprises, individuals and projects having made outstanding contributions to charity. The honorary title of “Charity Model” of the “China Charity Award” was issued to the deceased Professor Cheng Fenggui from SCUN’s School of Chemistry and Materials Sciences to commend her inspiring deeds of educating students of all nationalities with kindness, concern and love. This was the first time that SCUN won such a special honor.

Professor Cheng Fenggui graduated from the Department of Chemistry of Wuhan University in 1970, and joined SCUN in 1981, undertaking the teaching of organic wave spectrum, organic analysis, spectral analysis and other courses. As one of the founders of SCUN’s Analytical Chemistry Teaching and Research office, she made great contributions to the establishment and development of SCUN’s Department of Chemistry. She regarded teaching as an honorable job. Over tens of years, she was indifferent to fame and wealth, devoted to imparting knowledge and educating students and continuously perfected herself. She enlightened students in their study and cared about them in their life, so students regarded her as a good teacher like their mothers.

She was dedicated to cultivating students. She was still concerned about the professional development of the School of Chemistry and Materials Science when she was at death’s door. In February 2015, she made a will in the ward before her death: donating 100,000 yuan from her meager savings as scholarship to aid those poverty-stricken students of all nationalities who have great progress in study and encourage them to study hard and become useful persons. On the contrary, she requested a simple funeral for herself: scattering her bone ash into river…Her husband and children respected her decision. “There are so many people touching the heart of China. We are so inappreciable compared with them,” they said.

Her love warmed all people. Her colleagues, students and alumni were moved by her spirit of selfless dedication and made their contributions. The actual donation of Cheng Fenggui Scholarship reached 216,700 yuan, and the scholarship has become one of the high-quality scholarship projects of SCUN. In the past three years, the scholarship aided four students per year, 2,500 yuan for each student. In the eyes of SCUN teachers and students, the scholarship set up by Professor Cheng Fenggui is valuable spiritual wealth. SCUN alumni would spontaneously make contributions to the scholarship every year when returning to SCUN.

Zhuang student Lin Tingting of 2016 from the School of Chemistry and Materials Science with the major of Polymer Materials and Engineering and student Zhang Yanan majoring in Material Chemistry are the winners of Cheng Fenggui Scholarship . In their minds, Professor Cheng Fenggui is an elder loving her career and her students and warm like their family members, and they have felt her selfless love encouraging them to move ahead, even though they have never seen her before. “The scholarship has relieved the pressure on my life, and also gives me a sense of mission to study and spread positive energy,” Li Tingting said. “Professor Cheng lets us know that there are many kind people who would like to help us in the world, so that we have greater courage to progress,” Zhang Yanan told the reporter.

It is reported that “China Charity Award” is the highest award of the Chinese government in the field of charity, rated by the Ministry of Civil Affairs once every two years. The “10th China Charity Award” was launched from September 1, 2017 and lasted for a year through such procedures as relevant departments’ recommendation, preliminary examination of documents, verification at the Judging Panel Office’s meeting, review by the Judging Panel, online voting, deliberation at the working conference of the Minister of Civil Affairs, and social publicity.

Teacher Ou, husband of Professor Cheng Fenggui, has been to Beijing to receive this honor at the Great Hall of the People at the invitation of the Ministry of Civil Affairs. Teacher Ou expressed that this charity award has a special spiritual meaning which can be passed on and carried forward and that teachers should make due contributions to cultivating talents for the country because students are the hope of the country.
