The other day, the final of Southern China venue of the 22nd “FLTRP ETIC Cup” National University Students English Debate Competition was concluded at Shantou University. Chen Junbing and Liang Jiaqi, two students from the School of Foreign Languages of SCUN, won a second prize.
On April 13-14, led by two teachers of the School of Foreign Languages, Liu Xin and Feng Yanling, after six fierce contests, two debaters of SCUN performed better and better as the competition went on. Their English proficiency was solid and their thinking was logical. Their debate was calm and sharp. Finally they won a second prize and ranked 27th among the 100 teams. The two students said, through competing with strong debate teams including the champion team, they had not just accumulated experience and broadened their horizon, but also realized their shortages and distance from others.
The competition dates back to 1997 and is highly reputed among colleges and universities as an annual high-level English contest with a high authority and a wide influence. This year, the name of the competition was changed “FLTRP Guocai Cup”, which showed some new meaning. “Guocai” means national talents with patriotism in China and contributing to the soaring of China as well as international talents with a global vision and involved in international issues. Adhering to the idea of cultivating “Guocai”, the School of Foreign Languages made early preparations by actively reserving and identifying talents from a series of English competitions in the campus and offering training to the students of speech and debate teams throughout the year. Through the preliminary competition, quarter final and final of the campus, finally two students Chen Junbing and Liang Jiaqi were selected to take part in the final of Southern China venue on behalf of SCUN.
