SCUN student won second prize in Chinese speech contest

On July 22nd, hosted by the Secretariat of the China-ASEAN Education Exchange Week Organizing Committee and organized by the Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban Office, the 12th “Chinese Bridge” – HRH Princess Sirindhorn Cup Chinese Speech Contest for ASEAN Student Studying in China ended in Guiyang, Guizhou. Deng Shi’e(Vietnam), an SCUN 2018 Chinese international education graduate student, won the second prize. Xiao Xiaoyu was awarded the excellent instructor. Bao Shengxiang, deputy director of the International Cooperation and Exchange Department, led the competition and was invited to serve as the final judge.

The competition has two parts, the preliminary and final. After the strict selection of the preliminary competition, 24 attendees from 7 ASEAN countries in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Singapore, Vietnam and Laos advanced to the finals. The contestants came from 19 universities including Shanghai International Studies University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Guizhou University and Tianjin University. The final consists of a Chinese speech and a quiz. The Chinese speech scores the players from three parts: content, language expression, image and demeanor as well as visually enjoyability. The quiz part is randomly selected by the players and answered on the spot within a specified time.

The final theme of this competition is Realizing dreams in China and Embracing the World. With the theme of Let's get closer to my dreams, Ms. Deng shared her own story in pursuing studying with real emotions and beautiful language. She was admitted to a Vietnamese Youth University from an ordinary Vietnamese rural family, and became attached to China during her university. She went to the South-Central University for Nationalities to pursue her dreams through the Hanban Confucius Institute Scholarship Program. She hopes to develop her strengths in the future and contribute to the cooperation and exchanges between China and Vietnam and even the ASEAN countries.

This competition is one of the important components of the China-ASEAN Education Exchange Week. With this platform, young students learning Chinese in ASEAN countries show their friendship with China and close the educational exchanges and cooperation between China and ASEAN. At the same time, the event also demonstrated the positive role of SCUN in the China-ASEAN education exchange.
