Recently, a piece of good new is released from National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), that Prof. Zhu Zhengping in our university has been granted a special fund of NSFC— Fund for Fundamental Research of Scientific Instruments. Prof. Zhu co-operated with Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences to apply for the project entitled “Quick Digital Vertical Detection of Ionosphere and System Research”. The project is approved with a total fund of 1.4 million RMB, which symbolizes a breakthrough in this special fund for our university.

Fund for Fundamental Research of Scientific Instruments provides financial aids to researches of fundamental scientific instruments, and aids to invention and improvement of scientific instruments urgently needed for frontier studies. It especially funds those key scientific instruments promoting development of discipline frontiers, or instruments testing new methods and techniques. The project “Quick Digital Vertical Detection of Ionosphere and System Research” carries out research on technique in detection of ionosphere parameters.

Ionosphere influences communication, navigation, satellites, weather forecast, oil gas pipelines and grid system, etc., and relevant work of which demands timely detection of ionosphere parameters. At present, ionosondes, the instrument widely used in scientific researches and weather forecast are mostly imported. The project “Quick Digital Vertical Detection of Ionosphere and System Research”, mainly to be carried out by staff members from SCUN, will not only change the present situation, but also play a significant role in weather probe, detection of ionosphere changes at a certain time or space, and manufacture of detective devices applied at the upper ionosphere.
