Recently, the All-China Students’ Federation announced the evaluation results of the 2019 “The Stars of Self-improvement of Chinese College Students Scholarship. Lan Jirong, a grade-2017 graduate student majoring in environmental chemistry in the School of Resources and Environment Science of SCUN, won the scholarship.
Lan Jirong served as a part-time counselor and deputy secretary of the Communist Youth League Committee of the School. He was a registered volunteer in Chinese Young Volunteers Association. From 2016 to 2017, as the head of the Enshi Branch of the 18th Postgraduate Education Aid Group of SCUN, he taught for poverty alleviation in Gaodong Village, Baifusi Town, Laifeng county for a year, and established Trustworthy Bookstore of South-Central University for Nationalities to make contribution to poverty alleviation there. In 2018, as a provincial-level instructor for the national pollution source survey, he put forward valuable suggestion as to environmental protection with the results of scientific research. From 2018 to 2019, he went to the grass-roots areas to provide guidance to the local pollution source census for more than 30 times, visited more than 100 enterprises and submitted more than 20 reports to the county-level, municipal and provincial authorities in charge of environmental protection. From 2017 to 2019, he won more than 20 honors including “Outstanding Volunteer” for the national, provincial and county-level volunteer service plan for the western region.
At the end of 2018, Lan Jirong's 51-year-old father contracted terminal cancer. He went back and forth between Wuhan and Hangzhou to seek medical treatment for his father and study at the same time. At the end of 2019, his father died, but he persisted with his scientific research at school despite great grief ideals. During his seven years at school, he has published 18 SCI or EI scientific research papers, applied for 5 national invention patents (three of them were authorized, and one was being transformed into products), and won more than 60 honors including national scholarship and Challenge Cup extracurricular academic scientific and technological works competition. In his research, he took the lead in proposing a new method of microbial cleaning to achieve harmless and resource treatment of electrolytic manganese slag, which plugged the gap in the research on bioleaching technology for harmful components of electrolytic manganese slag in China. At present, this technology is being transformed into products by Guangxi CITIC Dameng Mining Industries Limited.
Lan Jirong has been playing an exemplary role as a Party member with his service for grass-roots organizations and his hard work in study and academic research. His stories have been reported by Youth.cn and other media or platforms for more than 20 times. In July 2020, Lan Jirong obtained his master's degree in SCUN and he is currently studying for a doctorate in Wuhan University.
In 2019, under the guidance of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League and the All-China Students’ Federation, China Youth Daily and New Oriental Education Science and Technology Group jointly carried out the selection activity for winners of The Stars of Self-improvement of Chinese College Students Scholarship. Ten students won the top prize of The Stars of Self-improvement of Chinese College Students Scholarship and 2,190 students won the second prize of the Scholarship. In addition to Lan Jirong, Zhang Xueyan, a graduate student of the School of Education of SCUN, also won the Scholarship.
