Students of SCMU Win Grand Prize in 4th University Students Metallurgy Science and Technology Competition of China

Recently, the final of 4th University Students Metallurgy Science and Technology Competition of China was held online. The work “Preparation of High-performance Heavy Metal Waste Water Absorbent with Electrolytic Manganese Slag Base and Its Application” won a grand prize of the event, which was designed by the team led by Ma Mengyu, a Class 2018 master student from the College of Resources and Environmental Science of SCMU (the other members of the team include Shao Li, Wei Hua and Liu Yanchang) under the guidance of Associate Professor Li Jia.


The University Students Metallurgy Science and Technology Competition of China is launched by the Steering Committee for the Metal Materials and Metallurgy Engineering Teaching of Colleges and Universities under the Ministry of Education, which is based on universities such as Northeastern University, Kunming University of Science and Technology, University of Science and Technology Beijing and Central South University and is held regularly amongst the in-school undergraduate and graduate students of majors such as metallurgy, materials, chemical engineering, resources, energy and environment nationwide. The event is intended to motivate the university students to actively participate in public-benefit scientific popularization undertaking, foster professional interests, promote their scientific innovation awareness, broaden their expertise boundary, train their process operation skills and improve their engineering practice ability.


A total of 219 scientific innovation works have entered the final. In the final, the participating teams delivered a seven-minute PPT presentation, and later answered questions raised by experts for eight minutes. Ma Mengyu, as the head of the participating team, participated in the debate of the master and doctoral student group, who won unanimous praise from the expert judges. Most of the teams of the said group were from universities with rich experience in environment and metallurgy majors such as Central South University, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Northeastern University and Wuhan University of Science and Technology.
