On the afternoon of November 3rd, the distinguished Professor Fang Shi, a nationally acclaimed composer and former director of the Chinese Musicians’ Association and Vice Chairman of the Hubei Musicians’ Association, was appointed as a distinguished professor at the School of Music and Dance. The significant appointment ceremony took place in the 14th teaching building, attended by Vice President Duan Chao, leadership members of the School of Music and Dance, and representatives from faculty and students. Dean Luo Yihua of the School of Music and Dance presided over the event.

Vice President Duan Chao, on behalf of the university, presented the appointment letter to Professor Fang Shi. He expressed deep appreciation for Professor Fang’s longstanding dedication to enhancing the university’s music program and academic research. His hopes were high that the School would thrive under Professor Fang’s experienced leadership, pushing the boundaries of discipline development and scientific research.

Following the ceremony, Professor Fang gave an insightful academic lecture titled “Adding Musical Wings to Song Lyrics”. He delved into his creative journey, focusing on his reasons for composing and his innovative ideas. During the lecture, he showcased 12 of his recently composed original Song lyric songs, offering a deep analysis of these works that seamlessly blend the delicate and bold styles of Song lyrics, marrying gentleness with fervor and incorporating a variety of vocal styles for a full spectrum of musical emotion.

Professor Fang’s approach to presenting Song lyrics in a diverse and publically appealing musical style was highlighted. He chose well-known and highly respected classic works for his compositions, emphasizing melody and singability. His meticulous attention to pronunciation, tone, and expression in his compositions makes them enjoyable and easy to learn and sing.  

The lecture concluded with a lively exchange between faculty, students, and Professor Fang. Dean Luo Yihua commended Professor Fang’s forward-looking and inspirational speech, encouraging faculty and students to strive for the creation of more outstanding works.

It is noteworthy that in recent years, the School of Music and Dance has been dedicated to attracting top-tier talent, leading to the high-quality development of the school and the university. This has included the appointment of renowned experts and scholars like Li Youping, Huang Baiquan, Liu Lian, Zhang Junren, and Yang Min as distinguished professors.
