On May 21, CCTV’s “Focus Report” aired a special report titled “Advancing Science Education: Finding the Right Formula”, showcasing science education achievements in primary and secondary schools across the nation. Luo Heng, SCMU Class of 2004 alumnus from the Bioengineering program and a leading practitioner in frontline science education, was invited to participate in the program to share his innovative practices and insights in primary science education.

Luo Heng currently serves as a researcher at the Key Laboratory of Natural Products Chemistry, Guizhou Academy of Sciences, while also holding the position of Science Vice Principal at Yuqing Middle School in Guizhou Province. Since his appointment at Yuqing Middle School in 2024, he has consistently focused on inspiring students’ scientific interest as his core mission, actively exploring ways to enhance science education quality with remarkable results. His feature interview on CCTV’s “Focus Report” represents recognition of his exceptional contributions to science education.

Following Ministry of Education guidelines for science education, Luo Heng developed a comprehensive education model. In teacher professional development, he established mentoring partnerships with over 10 teachers from biology, physics, and chemistry departments at Yuqing Middle School, enhancing faculty capabilities through optimized experimental course design and specialized teaching skills training. In curriculum integration and innovation, he creatively combines science education with practical labor, guiding students to conduct observations and scientific inquiries during agricultural work. In resource integration and utilization, he leverages the advantages of research institutions by organizing students to visit research frontlines for immersive learning experiences.

“The core of science education lies in transforming limited resources into distinctive resources”, reflects Luo Heng’s educational philosophy refined through practice. The “research institute and high school collaborative education” model he developed with his team creates a “research environment on campus” platform, enabling students in mountainous areas to closely observe cutting-edge research processes. This immersive educational experience not only sparks students’ scientific interest but also establishes a complete cultivation chain of “interest inspiration, cognitive deepening, andpractical innovation”.

Discussing the value of his educational practice, Luo Heng stated, “The core objective of our practice is to inspire students’ profound interest in science. By guiding them into research institutes for immersive experiences of the complete process of cutting-edge research conducted by scientists, students can genuinely feel the charm of scientific exploration through close observation and hands-on practice, thereby deepening their understanding and love for the scientific field.”

Since graduating from SCMU’s Bioengineering program in 2008, Luo Heng has consistently upheld the development philosophy of integrating “industry, academia, research, and application”. Since becoming a researcher at the Key Laboratory of Natural Products Chemistry, Guizhou Academy of Sciences in 2013, he has specialized in molecular pathology and pharmacology, developing a series of achievements around the characteristic resources of Guizhou’s traditional Chinese medicine and ethnic medicine. He has led 18 projects including National Natural Science Foundation grants, published over 140 academic papers (including more than 100 SCI papers), authored 8 monographs such as “Chinese Small-leaf Kuding Tea” and “Tujia Ethnic Medicine”, obtained 74 patents (45 authorized), established over 10 product quality standards, and developed more than 40 functional products. His research achievements have earned honors including the Guizhou Provincial Natural Science Award and Guizhou Provincial Pharmaceutical Science and Technology Award. He has been selected for prestigious programs including the Chinese Academy of Sciences “Western Young Scholar”, the Organization Department’s “Western Light” Visiting Scholar, and Guizhou Province’s Innovative Talent Development Program.
