On the afternoon of March 26, the inaugural training program of Wuhan’s “Distinguished Educators (Master Teachers) Development Project” commenced at South-Central Minzu University (SCMU). Liu Yi, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and President of SCMU, and Ding Huafeng, Member of the Party Committee and Deputy Director of the Wuhan Municipal Education Bureau, attended the opening ceremony. Forty outstanding leading subject teachers born in the 1980s, selected from primary and secondary schools and kindergartens across the city, became the inaugural cohort of participants. They will embark on a two-year systematic, tiered training program.

In his address at the opening ceremony, Liu Yi noted that the distinction of distinguished educators lies in their ideals and convictions, in their moral integrity, in their solid knowledge, and in their compassion. To become a true distinguished educator, one needs not only deep theoretical grounding but also rich practical wisdom; not only superb teaching artistry but also noble personal charisma. Liu Yi stated that to ensure the effectiveness of the training, the University has meticulously prepared the program by forming a team of experts, customizing a training plan, and building a high-quality learning platform. He encouraged the participants to dedicate themselves to their studies and achieve success, to integrate knowledge with practice and serve as “leading geese” in teaching, and to deepen collaboration between the University and the city through co-development and resource sharing, jointly creating a Wuhan model for cultivating master teachers.

At the opening ceremony, Wang Cheng, the project leader and Associate Dean of SCMU’s School of Education, systematically outlined the two-year training blueprint, clarifying that the project will strictly follow a five-stage pathway to guide teachers in their transition from “practitioners” to “brand educators”.

Chen Kaimao, a teacher from the No.1 Middle School Affiliated to Central China Normal University and a participant representative, stated in his speech that the project provides frontline teachers with a high-level platform to break through professional development bottlenecks. All participants will take distinguished educators as their role models, diligently acquire new knowledge, engage in hands-on practice, and collaborate to make progress together, effectively transforming the outcomes of the training into tangible results in education and contributing to the high-quality development of basic education in Wuhan.

In his remarks, Ding Huafeng elaborated on the developmental essence and contemporary responsibilities of “distinguished educators” in the new era.v He emphasized that becoming a distinguished educator in the new era requires a threefold elevation: from a teacher of knowledge to a teacher of character, from imparting expertise to inspiring enlightenment, and from educating students to promoting the greater good. This demands not only that teachers strengthen their political awareness, solidify their professional foundation, and develop distinctive educational philosophies, but also that they actively assume the responsibility of serving as role models and leaders. Through initiatives such as paired assistance, they should help advance rural education, promote the sharing of high-quality educational resources, and take concrete actions to propel Wuhan’s basic education toward higher quality and greater balance, thereby fulfilling the expectations placed on them and the mission of being distinguished educators.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Li Yifu, Director of the Work Division of the Wuhan Municipal Education Bureau. Leaders from the Municipal Education Bureau and SCMU’s School of Education attended the event. This initiative represents a significant step by Wuhan to thoroughly implement the strategy of building a leading education nation and to accelerate the development of a high-quality, professional, and innovative teaching force. It marks the official transformation of Wuhan’s teacher development from “experience-based inheritance” to “intergenerational succession”, establishing a new Wuhan model for cultivating educator-type teachers.
