Recently, a new progress has been achieved in the scientific expedition program of biodiversity in the border regions carried out under the leadership of the College of Life Science of SCMZU. The fruit of scientific expedition conducted in Qinghai-Tibet region, the book on biodiversity compiled by Liu Hong and Luo Lin, two teachers ofSCMZU-- “Collection of Pictures of Animals and Plants and Ecological Environment along Yunnan-Tibet Route” was published and issued by Wuhan University Press.

The book was the second monograph of the “Series Books on Discovery Trip of Life in Qinghai-Tibet Region” initiated by the College of Life Science of SCMZU and published with several academic institutions such as Tibet University, Southwest University for Nationalities, and Wuhan Botanical Garden of Chinese Academy of Sciences. The first book “Collection of Pictures of Animals and Plants and Ecological Environment along Xinjiang-Tibet Route” was published in 2019. Besides, from July to August this year, the College of Life Science worked with several research institutes of universities such as Southwest University for Nationalities, Beijing Forestry University, Tarim University and Taizhou University to carry out a biodiversity sample resource investigation at the Yarkand National Wetland Park of Sache County, a typical natural reserve in the south Xinjiang region, and finished the compilation and printing of the book “Safari in Yarkand”, solidifying the foundation for the biodiversity protection and research of Taklimakan Desert of Tarim Basin, Xinjiang.

The “Series Books on Discovery Trip of Life in Qinghai-Tibet Region” will come in five books to introduce the animal and plant biodiversity investigation findings along five major routes into Tibet, including Xinjiang-Tibet, Yunnan-Tibet, Qinghai-Tibet, Sichuan-Tibet northern and southern routes, with an aim to provide basis for the research of biodiversity protection in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau under modern traffic conditions. From 2011 to August 2021, the College of Life Science had organized 18 scientific expedition trips to the Qinghai-Tibet and Xinjiang regions, including 6 joint scientific expeditions. So far, 5 monographs have been compiled, and two have been officially published. This is also another important measure after the College of Life Science finished the major fundamental project of “Scientific Expedition of Biodiversity in Wuling Mountainous Region” and carried out discipline construction based on the protection and utilization of biological resources in ethnic regions. The earlier work achievements have won full recognition from the governmental departments at each level. Thus, the College of Life Science has undertaken several programs such as the supplementary investigation program on the wild orchid flowers of Hubei Province of National Forestry and Grassland Administration, the Wild Plant Resource Bank investigation program of Hubei Provincial Department of Science and Technology and the biodiversity sample resource investigation program of the Yarkand National Wetland Park of Xinjiang.
