From December 22-24, SCMU’s jump rope team shone brightly at the 2023 National Jump Rope League Finals, held at Guangzhou’s Huadu Sports Center. Competing against over a thousand athletes from 122 elite teams, including those from Shanghai University of Sport and South China Normal University, our team showcased exceptional skill and coordination. Participating across eight categories, SCMU’s athletes brought home an impressive tally: five golds, one silver, and one bronze. This performance underscored the university’s strong presence in the national jump rope arena.

The National Finals are the apex of rope skipping competitions in China, drawing only the top three athletes from each regional qualifier. 11 of our dedicated students and teachers, representing the Schools of Physical Education and the School of Management, earned their spots at this high-level event. The team kicked off their winning streak in the 10-person double Dutch speed relay, setting a new record with 455 jumps. In individual events, Sun Guilong from the School of Physical Education clinched the one-minute speed step title. The freestyle events saw more triumphs: Li Tong and Zhang Yuanfang dominated the women’s wheel jump, while Liu Binjia and Wang Xingsheng secured gold in the men’s category. Xiao Liaoliao’s flawless routine earned him the top spot in the men’s individual freestyle. Beyond their athletic achievements, the team was also awarded the Sportsmanship Award, and Coach Sun Guilong received national recognition for his outstanding coaching skills.

The unwavering support from SCMU’s leadership and departments has been pivotal in nurturing the team’s talents. Guided by the School of Physical Education’s expert faculty, the athletes are rigorously preparing for upcoming challenges, including the 2024 Asian Jump Rope Championships and the International Jump Rope Open. Their goal remains clear: to continue elevating SCMU’s reputation on both national and international stages.
