On June 24, the National Science and Technology Conference and the 2023 National Science and Technology Award Ceremony were held at the Great Hall of the People. Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, President of China, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, presented awards to the winners of the highest national science and technology award and delivered an important speech. SCMU participated in a project that won the second prize of the National Technology Invention Award, marking the university’s first-ever achievement in national science and technology awards.

The award-winning project,“Key Technologies and Applications for Low-calcium Reconstruction of Bulk Fine-grained Solid Waste to Produce Ultra-stable Materials”,was jointly completed by Wuhan University, SCMU, and othertwoinstitutions. Professor Hou Haobo from the School of Resource and Environmental Sciences at Wuhan University is the first contributor, while Professor Du Dongyun from SCMU’s School of Chemistry and Materials Science is the fifth contributor.

This project addresses the major demand for large-scale safe utilization of bulk fine-grained solid waste. It pioneered several innovations:Proposed the first domestic and international theoretical system for solid waste resource utilization and pollution prevention, including the room-temperature low-calcium activation mechanism for inert components of fine-grained solid waste;Invented key technologies such as a new method for room-temperature low-calcium activation of bulk fine-grained solid waste;Developed new technologies like“low-calcium room-temperature depolymerization, ultra-stable chemical consolidation”for fine-grained solid waste and“lattice-embedded solidification”for heavy metals.

The results have been demonstrated and applied in industries such as mining and metallurgy, transportation, and water conservancy across 20 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions in China, as well as countries along the“Belt and Road”.The engineering operation results meet the world’s strictest environmental standards. The project achieved a breakthroughin the large-scale safe utilization of fine-grained solid waste, which accounts for more than half of China’s solid waste emissions. It has positioned China at the international forefront of safe utilization of fine-grained solid waste, created a new industry for efficient utilization of recycled resources, and played an important role in promoting China’s green, low-carbon, and circular development.Among the National Science and Technology Awards, the results of thethreemajorawards have always attracted widespread attention. These are the National Natural Science Award, the National Technology Invention Award, and the National Science and Technology Progress Award. As the highest awards in China’s scientific and technological field, they provide the most authoritative recognition of researchers’scientific levels and achievements.

It is reported that a total of 250 projects were selected for the 2023 National Science and Technology Awards. These include 49 National Natural Science Awards (1 first prize, 48 second prizes), 62 National Technology Invention Awards (8 first prizes, 54 second prizes), and 139 National Science and Technology Progress Awards (3 special prizes, 16 first prizes, 120 second prizes).
