From September 23rd to 26th, SCMU organized a 13-member science popularization team to conduct activities in Debao County and Pingxiang City, Guangxi province. This initiative aligns with the directives from the National Ethnic Affairs Commission for universities under its jurisdiction to carry out “Science Popularization in Border Regions” and “Science Popularization in Rural Areas” activities.
The team comprised distinguished faculty members, including Professor Li Lin, Vice Dean of the School of Chemistry and Materials Science and a national science popularization advanced individual; Professor Ye Hengpeng, Vice Dean of the School of Resources and Environment; Professor Xia Yongbo, Vice Dean of the School of Mathematics and Statistics; Professor Yang Xinzhou, Vice Dean of the School of Pharmacy; Professor Tian Wei, Vice Dean of the School of Computer Science; Associate Professor Cui Yongqiang, Vice Dean of the School of Electronic Information Engineering; Professor Liu Hong from the School of Life Sciences, who leads a nationally recognized science popularization team; and Professor Huang Tao from the School of Chemistry and Materials Science, who heads a renowned teaching studio in Hubei Province.
Activities were held at Chengguan Town Experimental Primary School and Defu Community in Debao County, Debao County Deliu Manganese Industry Co., Ltd., and Pingxiang Ethnic Hope Experimental School. Representatives from the Ethnic and Religious Affairs Commission of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Debao County People’s Government of Baise City, and Pingxiang Municipal Government attended the events. During the opening ceremonies, SCMU donated science resource packages worth 50,000 yuan and books on scientific spirit to both Chengguan Town Experimental Primary School in Debao County and Pingxiang Ethnic Hope Experimental School. The university also inaugurated science popularization activity rooms at these schools.

Following the ceremonies, SCMU experts conducted various science popularization lectures for teachers and students, covering topics such as plant science, artificial intelligence, scientific experiments, cryptography and microchips, and enhancing science communication skills. Many teachers expressed that they found the training for science instructors particularly inspiring. In the student science classes, SCMU experts explained botany science knowledge and unveiled the mysteries of artificial intelligence, cryptography, and microchips. They presented engaging images and experiments, interacting with students to help them grasp scientific concepts more vividly and develop skills in observation, analysis, and problem-solving.
During the visit to Debao County, professors from the School of Resources and Environment and the School of Pharmacy conducted field research at Debao County Deliu Manganese Industry Co., Ltd. They provided professional technical guidance and consultation tailored to the company’s specific needs, addressing issues related to environmental protection, resource utilization efficiency, and product development. The team also visited Defu Community in Chengguan Town, Debao County, to educate residents on topics such as medicinal herb cultivation and proper medication use.
This initiative is part of the broader effort to thoroughly study and implement General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important thoughts on strengthening and improving ethnic affairs work. It also aligns with the spirit of the further strengthening science and technology popularization work in the new era and the relevant plans for ethnic affairs work during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. SCMU will continue to strengthen cooperation with various parties, innovate in science education forms and content, and provide more intellectual support and technological backing for the educational development of border regions.
