The Library Held Female Script Literature and Calligraphy Handicraft Exhibition to Welcome the 90th Anniversary of the Founding of the CPC and 70th Anniversary of SCMZU

Recently, the female script literature and calligraphy handicraft exhibition to “welcome the 90th anniversary of the founding of the CPC and 70th anniversary of SCMZU” was held on the first floor corridor of library and “Female Script” reading room. This exhibition was organized by southern documentation center branch and special department of library, and co-hosted by the library office.


Female script, also called female characters, is the only female writing still circulating in the world, and is also an endangered kind of ancient characters. It originated from Jiangyong County in Hunan,and popularized and being passed down among women in Jiangyong County and the nearby Dao County, Dayao Mountain in Yao Autonomous County in Jianghua, and part of Guangxi for thousands of years. In early 1980s, female script was first discovered and introduced to the academic circle by scholars of SCMZU. In 2002, female script was selected in “list of Chinese archives and literature Heritage” of State Archives Bureau. In 2005, female script was selected in the Guinness World Records of “the most gender conscious writing in the world”. In 2006, “female script tradition” was selected in the first national intangible cultural Heritage list.

This exhibition was carefully designed and organized by Li Qing, the chief librarian, with works rich in content and diversified in form, including female script calligraphy, painting, embroidery (screen, purse, fan, and handkerchief), book of three dynasties, fan book, fan painting, and other works.
